Is the Santa Cruz Chameleon a good cross country mountain bike?

I am planning on doing competitive mountain biking over the summer, and i am looking for a nice cross country mountain bike frame within the 500-600 dollar range. The best one that i have seen so far is the Santa Cruz Chameleon. Would this be a good investment? If not, what would be a better choice?
